Dynamic, talented, and passionate are the best words to describe saxophonist, vocalist, musician, and composer LAJ. His style is a unique blend of jazz, soul, and hip-hop.
LAJ, born Larry J. Smith II, lives and breathes music. His love for this art is vividly displayed in his performances and compositions. This Miami native began playing the alto saxophone at the age of 11. He learned quickly and his passion and inquisitiveness lead him to master all instruments in the saxophone family and other instruments such as drums, keyboards, and bassoon. He got his start playing in church and continued to grow as a musician at Miami Norland Senior High where truly began to master his craft.
After graduating from FAMU with a degree in Jazz Studies and Commercial Music LAJ received an invitation to be the featured Saxophone Soloist for CAMI and Halftime Live LLC’s production of DrumLine Live, which is a musical stage play based on the HBCU Marching Band experience. His solo in the production has been known to bring many to there feet while at the same time leaving others in shock and some in tears. The production has traveled Nationally and Internationally for 4 years.
After traveling and playing around the world LAJ has had time to release his first album entitled “Love Jones”. On this album he blends and mixes the sounds of jazz, hip-hop and his personal sense of soul to deliver musical confessions on the ups and downs of Love. The album features guest appearances by the up and coming Southern Hip-Hop Duo known as The “Educated Hustlers” and Eyme XY from the group “2 Squared” who was a highlight on the hit musical based reality show The X-Factor.
